British Values and SMSC
British Values are:
democracy; the rule of law; individual liberty;mutual repect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.
Every school in England must promote British Values in their SMSC development (Social, moral, spiritual and cultural curriculum) in order to ensure that pupils are prepared for life in modern Britain.
At Barton Moss, we promote an understanding of British Values throughout our curriculum. Every child respectful is one of our three Core Values and runs as a thread through all of our interactions in school. We have only five school rules and the first and most important is 'Do be Kind and Respectful'. We value strong relationships with, and between, all members of our community and have the highest expectations of our children in this regard teaching them to recognise when their interaction have been inappropriate, or even unkind, and to take responsibility for their choices.
Developing an understanding of the issues around Diversity and Equality are one of the two Big Issue strands that appear in every curriculum subject from RE through to Art and Design. Assemblies led by the headteacher focus weekly on different aspects of the SMSC curriculum and are followed up throughout the week at every opportunity by staff.
