Welcome to the Year 1 class page.

I'm the class teacher Mrs Chew

In Year 1, we have a broad and engaging curriculum, where the children are encouraged to be resilient and independent throughout all challenges.

Please see the curriculum zone for all areas of learning in Y1.

Class Routines

Our morning starts when the children come in and settle down to complete a small task such as handwriting or reading before register. We then split into groups for our phonics lessons the children are streamed in ability for this. Phonics is followed by a Literacy lesson where the children focus on a story from our termly author, the children will be encouraged to complete a small task and write independently using their phonic knowledge. After playtime we start Maths, we explore basic mathematical skills, the main focus in Y1 is place value.

Y1 have lunch in the hall at 12pm, the children are then supervised by the lunchtime staff as they enjoy exploring the outdoor environment.

In the afternoon we start with the register, followed by a short spelling activity.

Every afternoon we teach the non-core subjects, Science, PE, Art, Geography, History, Computing, PSHE, Music, RE and DT, these lessons have a focus and the children complete small tasks in groups.

On a Tuesday afternoon we have PE with Kickstart in the hall or outside.

On a Wednesday afternoon through the half term we will visit Forest school to support Geography skills in the local environment

On Friday afternoon we have a celebration assembly in class to celebrate class achievements throughout the week.

Going the extra mile for success

All home support is hugely appreciated and makes a positive impact on your child's learning opportunities. Please support your child by ensuring they read throughout the week. Group and individual reading takes place daily, children have a set day to read and change books. If children read at home, they will receive a raffle ticket and go into the daily raffle to win a prize.

Homework will be set each Friday on Spelling Shed and TT Rock stars.

This year, we are continuing with the 'Walk to School' scheme, where children receive badges for taking part and increasing their fitness. If you have to drive your child to school, they can still achieve an active badge by parking at the shops and walking the remaining distance.

If you have any questions about your child’s learning, please contact me on lauren.chew@salford.gov.uk.
